“I left my country because I felt that there is no life there,” Zuheir (30) explains. A f
ilmmaker from Lebanon, Zuheir became a refugee to escape the harassment he faced from being gay and HIV positive. He left to find “a home that I was missing in my home country.” After travelling to London where he then sought asylum,he recalls: “one of the most beautiful things I have heard from English people in particular, when I received my refugee status was Welcome Home.” Now, he says, London feels like where he belongs. It gives him “the courage just, like, to continue.” It is not always easy though. “Sometimes I feel that I’m very lonely being here. And just like far from the people I love.” But he finds joy in films, gaining a scholarship for a Masters degree in directing, which led him to work on an award-winning film. “My dream is to be on the red carpet, going to the film festival to receive my award.” For Zuheir, “art is all about sharing. I can share my experience. I can tell my story.”
