I am a Kurdish journalist from North Kurdistan/Turkey. Denied access to education, I taught myself how to read and write and went to university without any formal education to get a degree before working as a journalist. As a Kurd, I struggled to officially register my Kurdish name with the government in Turkey. After arrests and harassment, I was eventually forced to seek asylum in the UK
– I worked with Voice of America In the Middle East and various Kurdish media outlets as a journalist focusing on the Middle East politics, refugees, and women.
– I participated in Refugee Journalism project and Second Source which was created by a group of female journalists to tackle harassment and create an alternative network for women in the media.
– I wrote for the Guardian, Vice News, Humanitarian Practice Network and conducted projects working with refugees in Iraqi Kurdistan and Central Africa.
– I am one of the founders of the Kurdish Women Podcast.
– I currently live in Edinburgh and am focusing on photography and bringing to light the dynamic stories of refugees from different backgrounds.
